Ms Hollidays Cover Work. . .

Introducing Audience
Media has an effect on every one since we consume it through our everyday life. There is media all around us and some believe that it may affect us in a negative way however there are other critics who argue that it does not affect individuals in anyway.

Historical Background
‘Media’ is a recent term used to name the fantasies that people may have thought about back in history. Then leisure time was spent reading, writing and doing other active activities, instead of watching a film they would be more sociable and go to the theatre or musical in their free time. Unlike now when the media ha evolved and taken a new form to overrun the lives of many. The media had lead to people becoming much less interactive and less sociable and also in severe cases can lead to poor health through lack of exercise when children stay at home and play video games rather than become active and actually go out. Thought it can also bring us together as we can relate to the situations like in soap operas, etc.

The Audience as a Mass
MEDIA AUDIANCES:
• The media are often experienced by people alone.
• Wherever they are in the world, the audience for a media text are all receiving exactly the same thing.

This leads us to come up with media audiences, as masses. Early theorist believed that when we sit in the cinema or thereter or listen to the same music we become part of media masses. It can be very easy, living in this media saturated world to forget how strange this might once have seemed. These media quickly became extremely popular and at the same time there was an important difference between them and older forms of entertainment. Whereas in the past, many forms of entertainment were only available to those who could afford them, now suddenly films and radio particularly were available to all. Early media theorists struggled to understand this and found it easiest to compare the media audiences with the kinds of crowds they were used to from the world before the media – they came up with the ideas of the mass audience.

N* B* S* . . .

A lot of the shots inside the bus are close ups or medium shot this may have been done in order to show some of the mise-en-scene but more over to show the facial expressions and emotions shown by the characters. The mise-en-scene inside the bus shows the seats to be very close together and the lighting is high-key to show that it is daytime. Also the characters are dresses very normal in order to create a sense of realism and identification with the audience is created as they may be able to identify with the character. Mack-up and costume is also made to be very ‘normal’ for the same reasons too.

Harold and Kumar’s Trailer Questions.

Harold and Kumar’s Trailer Questions.

1. What aspects of the film are emphasised in the trailer? Why do you think this is?
The action is emphasised within this trailer as the characters are show in a number of shots in an active form. The lighting and sound also convey the aspect of action within this trailer.

2. How is the genre of the film established in the film trailer? (refer to the mise-en-scene including editing and sound in addition to visual/symbolic/written iconographies).
The genre of the film is ‘comedy’ it is established throughout the film through many aspects one of witch is camera movements the use of camera movements e.g. the fast cuts may connote the comedy as being very passed. Also the mese-en-scene of some scene also shows the audience that this film is a comedy.

3. From the information you see/ hear on screen only (and not from prior knowledge) who are the target audience of this film and how do you know?
From the information we see in the trailer, the primary target audience appears to be adults18 and over. This is because the trailer features a lot of sexual reference and also a play on word so it would obviously not be appropriate for a audience any younger than 18year olds unless with an adult.

4. How does the trailer show that this film is worth coming to see?
The trailer shows the audience that this film is worth coming to see as the storyline is briefly show however some of the clips shown crate an enigma leaving the audience with un-answered question making them want to watch the whole film. Also people may want to watch this film for escapism since it is in the comedy genre.

5. Trailers are not 'mini-films'. They are a genre in their own right and have their own set of easily recognisable conventions. List the conventions of film trailers
*Quick edited shots
*Close ups on the characters
*Captions.
*Timeing (Last 2-3mins)
*Diegetic Sound – Voiceover

Extennshion Taskk HomeWork . . .

Prom Night
The first image I choose to analyse was this shot from the thriller ‘Prom Night’ I decided to choose this shot since it is a medium shot showing clear facial expressions. We can see that the girl is shocked and confused this creates an enigma for the spectators as it leads to suspense as they would like to know what has caused the little girl to be frightened. Moreover, the terrified look on the little girls face can connote that there is something troubling her, which we as the audience do not know. Therefore, this leaves the audience questioning what it may be.

Hostel
This image from ‘Hostile’ is a close up shot; it shows clearly a boy in the foreground with a man a little blurred in the background. We can see that the man in the back has a gun in his hand and since this is a horror, we can gather that something may be wrong. This image shows the audience clear facial expressions we can see that something’s wrong and the child may need help.

HellBoy
This medium shot has a very heavy impact on the viewer; it shows strong facial expressions and clearly follows the conventions of a action movie. The prop held by ‘Hellboy’ is the gun, it is in the viewers face although this is not the focus of the shot, the man is the focal point in this shot. Furthermore this is a point of view shot as we are looking at the actor through the defendants’ point of view.

Scarface
‘Scarface’ is the last shot I looked at I choose this shot because it was a long shot, it includes the whole body. This Gangster film is in full action in this shot as we can see the main protagonist firing his gun. Body language can be analysed in this picture since it can be seen as well as the Mis-en-Scene.

1) Choose Two Extracts From Different Eras and Analyse The Cinimatography. Whay are The Key Differences?

Psycho (1960)

Sunset Boulevord (1950)

A lot of camera framing has been used throughout Psycho, there are a range of shots varying from Close-Up’s to Low and High angel shots. This contrast with the trailer of Sunset Boulevard were only basic camera movements have been used.

Many close-ups and medium shots have been used in Psycho this may have been done to show facial expressions or to create a suture. The music used in Psycho creates a tense atmosphere it connotes the genre of the thriller movie. The conventions of a thriller have been conveyed very well by Alfred Hitchcock.

Sunset Boulevard, has uses a voice over this is not very normal in film trailers. Unusual cuts have been used in this trailer like wipes, these are not very much used in trailers or even films, however this may have been because the technology was not very technical. Basic fades and wipes have been used very much throughout this trailer. It is not fast or paced.

Overall out of the two trailers I think Psycho is a more successful trailer since it has conveyed the conventions of its genre very well and it is successful in using cinematography.

FILM NOIR. . .

Film Noir -a.K.a- French for Black Film

Film noir is a cinematic term used primarily to describe stylish Hollywood crime dramas, particularly those that emphasize moral ambiguity and sexual motivation. Hollywood's classic film noir period is generally regarded as stretching from the early 1940s to the late 1950s. Film noir of this era is associated with a low-key black-and-white visual style that has roots in German Expressionist cinematography, while many of the prototypical stories and much of the attitude of classic noir derive from the Hardboiled school of crime fiction that emerged in the United States during the Depression.

The term film noir (French for "black film"), first applied to Hollywood movies by French critic Nino Frank in 1946, was unknown to most American film industry professionals of the era. Cinema historians and critics defined the canon of film noir in retrospect; many of those involved in the making of the classic noirs later professed to be unaware of having created a distinctive type of film.

Some Facts. . .

  • Low Key Black And White Visual Style
  • Linked With Low Key Lighting And Shades Of Black And White

Poster Comparison. . .

Comparison Of The Mise-En-Scene

Costumes -
Costumes used in these movies are all different in actual fact only in the film “Mean Girls” are the actors actually wearing costumes. “
Madagascar” has no use of costumes since they are animated animals and “Mirrors” no costumes are visible. Their for costumes of the characters in each film differs from one another. The costumes of the characters in “Mean Girls” are shown to be very casual, but girly connoting a ‘chic-flick’. Film “Mirrors” has not shown any costumes since the main image is focused upon a face which is what you would expect to see on a Horror Film’s advertisement.

Light -
Lighting, lighting used throughout all three movies is very different. “Mirrors” however differs from both since it has used very low-key lighting. This is a very typical convention to have a dark back ground this conveys the horror genre completely. Similarly to convey the other two genres low key lighting has also been use but it is more natural, “Mean Girls” may have use this type of lighting to creat a realistic approach to the movie. “
Madagascar” has used artificial high/low-key lighting as it is an animation.

Actors -
“Mirrors”, the main actor had been shown on the poster for mirrors, this is a typical conventions used throughout horror movies. Using a main extreme close up shot of a face showing particular facial expressions. However in “
Madagascar” and “Mean Girls” the main actors are shown in groups this may have been done to convey the genre of the movie. Although in “Mean Girls” Linzy Lohan is shown to bee standing on her own this may have been done on purpose to show the audience what the film may be about. “Madagascar” differs from both of the two films since the actors are animated not real.
Make Up -
Madagascar has not used any make-up and nether has mirror although mean girls make up is used to reinforce the girly attitude the film is based upon. it is quite natural this may have been done to create a realistic approach and a reality to be put back into the movie.

Props -
There are no props being shown in the three of the extracts.

Setting -
”Mirrors” poster has no setting since it just shows a extreme close up of face, “Mean Girls” is similar to this also does not have a setting only the four girls are show to be standing. The only movie out of the three movies that actually has a setting is “
Madagascar” it is set in an African back ground, this may have been done since it is a children’s movie and an animation.
